Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Ritual Butcherer

I give you some background information first… ARCHGOAT was formed in 1990 and the guys in this band are: Ritual Butcherer, Lord Angelslayer and Blood Desecrator. They have had problems with the line-up, especially guitarists and Kai told me a few weeks ago that they haven't bassist at the moment...

Let's start this interview with information about how your songs and lyrics originate…?

-Well, all of our songs come out purely from inspiration and we don't plan them beforehand. Sometimes it takes only 15 minutes to do a song and sometimes it takes two weeks. We take the lyrics directly from the Lord Angelslayer's dreams and visions. We don't do our lyrics just for fun but lyrics have a special meaning for us!

What is your opinion about Christian and political bands which play e.g.dm?

-It depends how those bands bring their message up. Actually it doesn't matter if those bands exist but only if they are serious about what they do!

Okay, tell me what you have done so far and are there any hopes about LP?

-We have done a demo and 12” EP so far and we have got only positive response from the people. And we are going to do a split-LP with BARATHRUM in autumn! We have a deal with Necropolis records and I think that Necropolis is the best label because they have asked everything from us before they do something. About the LP I must say that it'll come out maybe next year… at least I hope so!

Tell me something about your gigs?

-Well, we have had several gigs so far, and our “show” is a kind of black mass for ourselves and we are in our own world during the gig. We hate to plan gigs beforehand because it could spoil the atmosphere. I think that we are the “thorniest” stage-band in Finland, if you know what I mean?!

I can imagine… then the question which appears very often in these interviews, tell me your opinion about following things… first about Satanism?

-Satanism is the way of life.

Deicide?

-Clowns…!

Church…?

-Shit institution full of conflicts, I don't hate anything as much as Christianity…!

Money?

-Secured future.

And finally, native country?

-Just duties…!

Then I want to know your opinion about the Finnish scene…any favourites?

-I think that there are quite a strong death/black-metal scene here in Finland! I think that Finnish black-metal is most often good than shit. Bands like BEHERIT, IMPALED NAZARENE and BARATHRUM are my favourites but there are lots of others I like!

What are the foreign bands you can mention as a good bands?

-Hmm, VENOM, old CELTIC FROST, BLASPHEMY, NECROMANTIA and so on…

Can you tell me your opinion about this Norwegian-thing… have you got any threats so far?

-I think that what the Norwegians do, is childish. If they really want to make war that is all right for us. I wonder how bands like DARK THRONE changed their style into black-metal just when it was becoming a trend. More strange is that they started to give comments how real and original black-metal it is!

What do you hate most in yourself, in music and Finland?

-In music I hate people who make trendy music for trendy people. A main thing I hate in Finland is state church. What we hate in ourselves is better to leave out!

Okay, this interview is about to end so tell me if you have anything to say…

-Crucify Jesus Christ and his worthless lackeys!

BARATHRUM (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Demonos Sova

Let's start with background and line-up information…

-We started under the name DARKFEAST but we changed our name into BARATHRUM after several line-up changes. We have played with our current line-up since turn of the year ‘92/'93 and the current line-up is: Demonos/drum and vocals; Infernus/bass guitar; Blood beast/guitar. Nowadays I play a drum because our ex-drummer, Necronom, had to leave the band because he has some serious problems with his heart!

It's sad to hear… but back into the interview, how do you do your songs and what do the lyrics contain?

-I do 99% of our songs. Lyrics come from my mind and tell about dark consciousness, Satanism, witchcraft, sex, desires, occultism, darkness etc. even if sometimes very symbolically. I think these lyrics are quite philosophical and deep. You know… BARATHRUM isn't any kind of scene but it's exactly what I am! If BARATHRUM has some kind of image it's the same as I am!

Okay, what does the BARATHRUM mean?

-It's simple… BARATHRUM means: Eb nac gnihtyna sa peed sa si hcihw ssenkrad cissyba! (Got it? –edit.)

How about your gigs, what do you do on stage etc.?

-We have had under ten gigs so far but we'll play some gigs in a near future. Our gig contains extracts from traditional rituals which have been merged into our show. Our show isn't just entertainment for kids but it has a deeper meaning for us.

What have you released so far?

-Well, we have released two demos, Witchmaster and Battlecry, witch have been sold out but you can get a copy of each by sending a plank tape and enough IRCs or stamps. If somebody wants to contact us remember to send those IRCs or stamps for sure reply in any kind of contacts! A couple of labels have contacted us about 7” but I'm not interested.

I have heard something about the split-LP with ARCHGOAT, is it true?

-Yes, next summer may come out split-LP with ARCHGOAT through Necropolis records. We have been in studio with Holocausto. Recordings are over and there are mixing and other things left. There should be over 20 minutes of our music in the split-LP. The songs in the split-LP are: Death is saviour, Lord of south and fire, SaLuBeLe, Land of tears, Black goat, The force of evil and Devilish sign. The order of the songs aren't the same as mentioned above.

It would be very interesting split-LP indeed. I like to know do you have any influences from any bands?

-I don't think that I have taken very many things from other bands but of course there is always something that can be similar to some bands.

What about your favourite bands then, can you give me any names?

-My favourite Finnish bands are BEHERIT, IMPALED NAZARENE, and UNHOLY. Foreign favourites are e.g. VENOM, ROTTING CHRIST, BATHORY, NECROMANTIA, HELLHAMMER, MONUMENTUM, old CELTIC FROST and so on. There would be lots more but I have so terrible hangover right now that I don't want to mention any other names.

Well it was a long list… but what you think about the Norwegian bands and their doings?

-We have got some death-threats but I do not think that they are threatening at all because the Norwegians fight against their own principles. FORGET THE NORWAY!

What do the following things mean to you…

First: Money?

-Essential thing.

What about army?

-I won't go to kowtow!

Okay, next period of depression, what about it?

-It will go by.

Christianity…?

-The enemy number one!

Surprise… and finally what you think about women?

-Yeah… I like pervert ladys. Whips etc. excite me!

I like women too but whips, hmm, I don't know but anyway… to the next question, please! How much mail you get from the fans etc.?

-We get more than enough mail and I do not like those ‘zines and compilation tapes which want material without sending any IRCs or stamps. DARK MOON ‘ZINE doesn't belong to these… thank you for that! (Thanks to you! –edit.)

Have you ever been ripped-off?

-Most of those rip-offers may be in Poland and in the other eastern countries. SLOW DEATH FOR ‘EM! SHEMHAMFORASH!

Tell me your lucky number and favourite colour!

-I am myself in black clothes but I also like red. My lucky number is my own cosmic number but also 666 is a hard one!

The interview is about to end but the final question. Tell me your future plans and anything else you would like to say in the end of this interview?

-We try finish with that split-LP and we try also get more gigs so any organizers… please contact us, we'll come cheaply. Dark, severe and hard regards to S/M tattoo, BM-, weirdo etc. freaks. Thanks Tommi for this interview.

BEHERIT (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Holocausto

Let's start this interview with your line-up... you have had problems with it, don't you?

-Well, it's hard to find suitable guys, so our line-up changes very often...!

I hope that you can get a permanent line-up soon. Tell me your products and also are those older releases still available...?

-We have some releases... "Seventh blasphemy"-demo; "Demonomancy"-demo; pic.EP "Dawn of Satan's millennium"; "Drawing down the moon"-CD/LP and also some split-LPs etc. I got a compilation-LP "The wine of Satan" by post, we have a song called "Paradise (of my demonic host)" on it. Old products are no longer available... only some trade-lists could contain those old products, I don't know.

I think that your "Drawing down..." is a fantastic record! Are you satisfied with it?

-Yes... I'm satisfied with our latest.

I noticed that Spinefarm has helped you with that "debut"... has any foreign label contacted you?

-Labels from abroad have sent us letters and contracts but Spinefarm is the best record company in the world...!!!

You are going to release 7" EP and I think that Necropolis records has something to do with it... tell me about it?!

-Necropolis records release that 7" EP, "Messe des morts" but nothing else! It contains four songs which are: Beherit; Satanic chaos; Seventh blasphemy; Messe des morts. It's a kind of noise-party EP because I wanted to show people that we aren't any kind of "rock poser-star" shit, BEHERIT is ordinary UG-band so fuck you!

Alright... but please tell me your opinion about Turbo-music, this is old matter but anyway!

-Money changed Turbo-music into total rip-off assholes. Those guys in Turbo owe me something about 40000 marks ($8000!), and beat them up before Christmas.

Okay, let's go into your music next, what kind of lyrics you do?

-Lyrics of our songs deal with occult, satanism, paganism and devil worship. Sex and serial killers have also included.

How important those lyrics are for you?

-Lyrics aren't very important for BEHERIT, I just try to do as many sharp sentences and words which sound fucking brutal as I can into my songs!

Do you have any topics from which you won't ever do any songs?

-Well, the worst thing I can imagine is that some band plays with masks on, they would have vocalist with growly voice and then their lyrics would deal with politics and environmental things. We'll never do anything like that!

What is your opinion about Christian metal bands and their lyrics?

-Christian metal bands suck... I hate Christianity more than anything else!

Do you have any influences...?

-BATHORY has always been and will be our biggest influence! Nowadays also hardcore techno has influence on our music but we transform it into metal because we are metal band.

What band is the biggest fake?

-Well... at least BURZUM is one of those bands I can't take seriously because I know the guys who play in BURZUM... but of course there are much worse bands in world than BURZUM!

What is your opinion about Finnish scene and can you name any good Finnish bands?

-Here are many good bands in Finland but the best is IMPALED NAZARENE (GODZZZ!!!) You can find trendy people and bands everywhere but it doesn't matter to me at all until those guys don't tell me what is true and what's not...

What is your gig situation at the moment?

-We don't play live at the moment. Many people have asked us to the tour etc., but our line-up problems and the lack of time keep us from the tour.

If you play live, what kind of situation it would be?

-We play to the guys who like our music. We offer them an opportunity to party during our gig!

Nowadays devil worship and things like that have got lots of publicity in the media... tell me your opinion about these things?

-These things got same kind of publicity abroad a few years ago, everything arrives in Finland later than to other countries. Church got scared because people drew away from Church during this period of depression. These devil worship stories are quite ridiculous, all the articles have been made by order of the Church! In many stories point to satanism but heavy-rock etc. has nothing to do with real satanism! Devil worship is totally different thing, it's only "religion" created by the Christian church and it get stronger with the help of media. The base of Christianity is the fear of god! It's religion of a blind man! I was also asked into TV2 but I refused because I have noticed that it's impossible to try to explain anything to those fanatics. BEHERIT isn't any kind of religion, we are music!

That should be clear... and next I want to know your opinion about these following things. Firest... money?

-Money make me happy.

Period of depression?

-Esko Aho is dead! (who is he? -edit.)

Christianity... again...?

-Problem of weak people!

Underground 'zines?

-Cool thing, YO!

And finally women...?

-Sex and problems!

Speaking of problems, have you got any death-threats from the Norwegian bands... what you think about those bands?

-Hey, all the Norwegian bands and guys are true. Fuck you... those guys aren't any kind of trends... many of those black-metal bands have been there already half a year... HAIL NORWAY!!!

I agree, those guys are genies... do you get letters from the 'zines, fans and maybe from the girls?

-This is, hmm, maybe the third interview so far. We get also love letters, hi Paul!

Okay... what is your favourite colour and lucky number?

-Well... I see everything in quite opposite colours, I have cyberpunk mind... number 44100 is great!

Well... into the point, how often you rehearse and do you have any other interests?

-We haven't rehearsed for a long time but we should start rehearsing soon. Couple of times a week should be enough! Music is my life... everything deals with music (and sex)!

Can you tell me about your future, and how soon you will do your next LP?

-Next LP will be recorded in autumn '93 or in spring '94! Drawing down the moon just recently came out.

Okay, thanx for your answers and time... do you have anything to say?

-Thanks to you for the great questions, my message: is E.T. on X.T.C.???

CRADLE OF FILTH (UK)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Dani

Okay, let's start this interview with the history of C.O.F...?

-CRADLE OF FILTH's current formation has been in effect for six months and in that time we have played with the likes of CANNIBAL CORPSE, PARADISE LOST, CANCER, CEREBRAL FIX, CADAVER, ANATHEMA, XENTRIX, MY DYING BRIDE, DECOMPOSED etc. etc. The sinister result of this liaison with darkness has been the promotape, "Total fucking darkness" and the highly successful "Fuck your God" -shirts... as for the line-up, it stands with Dani/vocals; Ben/orchestration and hammerkeys; Paul/lead guitar #1; Paul/lead #2; Robin/bass; and Was/drums and percussion - formerly of fellow English band, SOLEMN.

What about your promo, has it sold well?

-The promo has sold over 600 copies in 4 months with long/short sleeves hovering around the 350 mark which isn't that bad really.

Tell me about your song writing?

-We inspire each other to write material. As for lyrical content, I focus on personal Luciferian beliefs and dreams like sinister Hermetic magick, Aeonic magick and path workings, The dark immortals, Eros and Thanatos sexual stimulation in conjunction with planetary workings, Satanism. True satanism of the genuine way.

Tell me about your influences and please tell me your favourite bands?

-Influences come from study, a walk through the twilight countryside, intercourse and anything appealing to my acausal instincts. Musically, influence flows from MERCYFUL FATE, (early) DESTRUCTION, EMPEROR, ANATHEMA, IMPALED NAZARENE, DOORS, BATHORY, VENOM, THE GATHERING, PYOGENESIS, BEHERIT, DECEMBER MOON, HOLY MOSES etc.!

I think that you are a black-metal band but what you think about that?

-There are mixed relations to being labeled "black-metal" for us. A lot of people regard us as being an extreme BM outfit, others as a death/doom thing. To me, we're a black metal band. To me and most free-thinking individuals, black-metal doesn't have a defined sound (as certain people have led us to believe) it stems from the "feeling" of the band. It has to be propitiating to the dark! The best black-metal band were (and will be again) MERCYFUL FATE and they were very "heavy-metal" - but they created that haunting, sinister atmosphere that adheres to black-metal perfectly!

Are you familiar with those Norwegian black-metal bands which send those death-threats to other bands and have you ever had any problems because of your music???

-Of course, I think everyone is familiar with these bands. It's a strange phenomenon because the music they make is fantastic yet the people behind it are complete twats... (not everyone, I know that quite a few are real honest guys, Euronymous being one of them!) We haven't had any threats from the (penis) "circle" yet have had threats from Christian groups and occultists who don't agree with our stance. We've also had people wearing our shirts kicked out of college, beaten up and arrested. What ever happened to free expression Tommi?

Well, it's shitty that these things happen, really! Could you tell me what you think about satanism, church of satan and anything around this matter?

-Satan to me is the element of all silent and hidden emotions (amongst personal belief). I belong to several organizations... no organizations. There is a difference between satanism and devil worship, but I am not at liberty to bring my beliefs into the conversation. Whatever organization/temple; there is always an emblem to channel worship/power to... However, satanism as a term seems to have been picked up by pseudo-intellectual occult movements providing comfortable "armchair" satanism and satan in relation to the real, often harsh and uncompromising realities of "genuine" ways. It is this misinterpretation and distortion that has confused the issue and led thousands of would-be Christians to a more lenient and defiant "religion"!

What do these following things mean to you... church?

-The church means nothing to me other than the nazarene lie. In England its power is waning due to the dissension between C.O.E. and Roman Catholic faith and eventually it will be destroyed.

Native country...?

-I would favour a return to the glorious days of Albion but I'm inclined to admit that England is a beautiful country, filled with old scars that never have healed. It is a very majestic, somber nation!

Money...?

-Money is a drug that I need often - I'm looking forward to the day I need not worry about it any longer. There are more things important than money, but not quite so prolific.

What about sex...?

-Sex is abundant for me at the moment. Me and my mistress practise constantly to relieve the tensions of life. It also comes into ceremonial workings... unconventional, weird sex is definitely flavour-of-the-month too, sado-eroticism, domination, bondage etc., etc.

Do you get lots of mail and do you answer all the mail you receive?

-Yes, we get a bloody lot of mail! You always get these mid-European letter writers who just want everything free with absolutely nothing in exchange - no IRCs or questions, just orders and demands. My usual comment is: if I'd wanted to send their shitty 'zine a free tape I would've done, ha! ha! And yes, loads and loads of rip-off letters!!!

Do you have any changes to get a deal with some record label?

-Actually, we are to release our debut 12" EP, "The principle of evil made flesh" soon on Cacophonous/Vinyl Solution records. We have just been out across Britain playing the material and now we get the chance to release it. More companies may still approach us!

Do you think that black-metal band must do certain kind of lyrics... do you have any topics you couldn't ever do a song?

-Black-metal has to be inclined towards darkness - as for death-metal, it takes no odds to what stance is taken, honestly. CRADLE OF FILTH could never sing politically, FUCK THAT!!! Leave that nonsense to NAPALM DEATH. Nor could we write about enjoying cheap gore with titles like... "Visceral devourment" and "Gorging on genital evisceration". I think that sucks big time and yet there are so many death bands doing it, aren't there?

What you think about British scene?

-The British scene is excellent. PARADISE LOST are big-headed wankers but ANATHEMA are delicious! They are very good friends of ours and I must admit, their new album is fucking excellent! Other cool bands in the scene are DECEMVER MOON, EMBALMER, CURENTUS, SOLEMN, VURIAL, THUS DEFILED, HEATHEN FOETUS, THEODICY, FIFTH DOMINION, GOMMORAH, SALEM ORCHID and MONOLITH!!!

Do you have some other hobbies than just playing music?

-Reading, studying the forbidden, drinking, my mistress, play more music!

Tell me your future plans if you have any plans...?

-Our future plans include releasing the 12" EP and then the proceeding LP, then and in between we'll do some more big gigs and come across to Europe. These are our very immediate plans. Anyway...

Any comments into the end of this interview...?

-Thank you for the interview Tommi (pray to the dark moon!). Agios o Atazoth!

DECORYAH (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Jukka Vuorinen

And as usually, I start with background information... DECORYAH was formed in late '89 when their style were simplier metal in vein of early CELTIC FROST. They did their 1st demo, "Whispers from depth", in February '92. After that there have been some line-up changes and in December '92 they recorded the 2nd demo "Cosmos silence" and with this demo they got a deal with Swiss Witchhunt records!

Okay Jukka, tell me something about those products you have already done and also something about deal with Witchhunt records...?

-Our 1st demo hasn't sold so good, 'cause we promote only few copies. The first demo gave us only experience from studio and the knowledge how the underground works. "Cosmos silence" has been very wanted and we have received almost only positive feedback from those who have ordered our demo and 'zines because of its originality and beauty. So if you want to get our stuff, order/buy our "Ebonies"-EP it should be out now! About our deal... Witchhunt contacted us before the 2nd demo was released and we signed the 7"-deal. We haven't sign yet the CD-deal but it's only matter of time.

Tell me two adjectives which describe your music in a best way!

-Our music is kind of dismal, but it is also beautiful and peaceful sometimes, so I can't choose between those two words and I can't say why our music is dismal and beautiful.

Okay, what about your songs, how the songs are born?

-Everything starts usually from guitar riff written by me or piano riff written by Jonne. Then we play the riff together and the song processing continues and after a while, there it is.

Tell me something about your lyrics, are there any deeper meaning...?

-In our lyrics there are a deeper meaning in them, but I don't tell you about it bacause you must read our lyrics and understand what you are able to...!

And before I continue this interview, I tell you line-up of DECORYAH... Jukka Vuorinen/vocals and guitar; Jani Kakko/guitar; Mikko Laine/drums; Jonne Valtonen/keyboards... and then into the next question: Do you have any musical paragons...?

-Actually, we don't have any paragons, but if I have to say the person, who I respect as a musician, I'd say John Sebastian Bach. I really admire his work!

Hmm... what is your opinion about Finnish metal, any names to tell as an example of good Finnish group?

-I think Finnish metal is quite good for them who like death-metal, and I think that Finnish metal includes too many trends. THERGOTHON and UNHOLY are two bands which are really worth of mention!

Then your opinion about this Norwegians against others-thing...!?!?

-We are not a black-metal band and that is why we are not involved into this war between satanists...

That's clear... what about your gig situation at the moment?

-We don't play any gigs before Autumn because we are writing now songs for our CD that we are going to record in summer.

What do you do on stage, I mean besides of playing...?

-About our stage show, I can promise you, we won't mess up ourselves by blood or masks, 'cause those things belong to bm-bands. I think a few black-metal bands have a great live show (e.g. I.NAZARENE).

Do you have anykind of "deeper" meaning in your stage show... or is it just entertainment for kids?

-I don't know anything about this kids entertaining and if the "normal" live show is kids entertaining, I doubt that the entertaining would change to something else if the band adds some deeper things into their show, or what do you think? I think it's a same for those kids if there are black candles on the stage or not. We only play and I think that our music is not the music which one kids are crazy about. Only extra thing we have in stage is our additional female vocalist/flutist Sini Koivuniemi and it's not sure that she will be always with us in the gigs!

Then a kind of question that appears in my 'zine very often... so, what do these following things mean to you, first money?

-Money is thing that everybody needs, but it can't be and it will never be main thing in our lives. Money and music, I think they have nothing to do with each other!

Religion...?

-I have my own philosophical thoughts and that's about it.

Women...?

-Can't live without them!!!

Do you get any mail from the fans, labels etc. ?

-Yeah, I receive about 15-20 letters in a week and I think the number of letters will grow when our "Wisdom floats"-CD is released. I have been ripped-off a few times by a few 'zines from Poland and Lithuania... record labels haven't written us because they haven't heard our music caused by our lack of promotion.

Have you changed your style or have you always played this style of music as nowadays, and what is your opinion about the bands that follow trends...?

-We haven't always played the same music as we play now. At first we played speed-metal, then we changed our style to more death-metal and after that we found our own style, which is some kind of dark and dismal atmospheric-metal. Now you must think, hey that's fucking trendy band... don't you think that way now? Let me clear your mind, 'cause we have very good reason why we have played those two earlier styles. When we started everybody was about 13 years old and we all were listening METALLICA and ANTHRAX etc. shit in those days. You know, a 13 years old kid is not incarnation of originality or does he/she? Well, it was very natural that we started to play speed-metal and after a while we just add death vocals on that shit. The guitar riffs didn't change much, it was some kind of speed-/heavy-/death-metal without very fast parts. The tempo of our music has almost been the same through the years, it has only got a bit slower. Then there were a few line-up changes and we really found our natural style, which wasn't death- or black-metal or anything old! I could say that we have created something new, which is very, very different and unique and so you can say that we really aren't trendy shit, and I think you Tommi can confirm that or what? I think trendy band, which are running after the many are some shit that you can't describe with the words!

That should be clear... okay??? Tell me next what is your favourite colour and lucky number?

-My fave colour is something between 4-D purple and 3-D black and no lucky numbers...!

What is your opinion about underground 'zines and do you have any projects on that area...?

-'Zines are just fine, without them there wouldn't be as strong underground as it seems to be now. Yes, we are running our own mag called URILIAH and its first issue has been out now for a while and it's still available. So if you want 48 pages of good interviews, articles, reviews with good lay-out, send 20mk/$5/$6 and I can promise that you won't be disappointed!

Do you take any ideas from movies, books and does the politics interest you?

-We take only ideas to our music from our (sub)consciousness, we have no influences from any music styles, but everything we sense has an effect on our music, so you can say that our music & lyrics reflect our souls... We would never write a song about things that we are not interested. I'm not saying now that we are not interested in politics at all, but I'm saying that with our music we try to express our feelings, emotions and pathos, not local social life or social politics or our opinion of economy or our views of budget of this nation, NEVER!!! How could you play atmospheric-metal, if you were same time singing about domestic policy?

How about your rehearsal...?

-We rehearse about two times a week all together and then we play about 1,5 hour. That isn't much but then we rehearse alone much and sometimes I just play together with our other guitarist. We have only one cover song "Runaway" by D. Shannon. We have a good possibility to play; we have a good rehearsal place.

What else you do than just play... does any kind of sport interest you...?

-As I've said we are running our URILIAH 'zine... About sport I think it's not so nice to jog around or do everything for sport. But I think it's not nice to be a weak guy, who is not so popular in the eyes of girls. It wouldn't be nice if you take a few steps and after that your heart is beating 220 times per minute. Three of us goes to gym and we have been doing that over a year now so you can decide that are we into sport or not...

Okay... the final question: Tell me your future plans...

-We'll hit the ECI-sound studio again during the summer and the result should be the "Wisdom floats" -CD. After that we start to write more stuff again...

Add anything you like to...

-Well, I'd like to add a few words to the end... Thanx for this interview, it was quite nice to answer it. Hello to Hammer of Damnation mag/THERGOTHON, all 'zines which contact DECORYAH, for info + etc. enclose one IRC (or one dollar), it makes sure that we'll reply!!!

DENIAL OF GOD (Den)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Azter

About the bands background I say that DENIAL OF GOD was formed 5.7.1991 when the band rehearsed for the first time. And about other things with that I asked Azter...

So tell me something around this matter...!?

-All members had been listening to metal for several years, and I and Ustumallagam wanted to form a totally dark, evil band, and when we met Uksul we formed the band. We wanted to play the darkest music we could. We were mainly inspired by bands like VENOM, (the true) MAYHEM, BATHORY, HELLHAMMER and CELTIC FROST so we haven't been affected by any trend or something! We play out of belief, and nothing else! If anybody calls us trendy he must be a fake himself...

What is your current line-up and have you had any problems on that area?

-The current line-up is: Ustumallagam/vocals; Azter/guitar; Uksul/drums... We'll kick Nomos out bacuse he is too lazy and bad. We probably have a replacement, but I will play bass on the demo. The worst line-up problem was when it was only me and Ustumallagam, no drums and no bass... that was frustrating. We probably have already a new bassist, we'll need him on our forthcoming gigs!

Who does your songs and what kind of topics they deal with?

-I (Azter) do almost all the music at the moment, and Ustumallagam does most of the lyrics. But, it's sure that I'll soon write more lyrics and Ustumallagam will probably come up with a few riffs too. Also Uksul is working on a keyboard track. The lyrics and music have always been the same, but the new stuff is better because it's much deeper and darker, you'll see/hear that on "The dawn of Aemizaez" -demo. Pure horror!!! The ideas for the lyrics mostly come from our own minds, but also from things we see. The lyrics are what you could call horror lyrics and they are actually very different from each other. It's up to the reader/listener to interpret the lyrics. Lyrics mean a lot to us - they are very important too! Many bands do not care about their lyrics and that is shitty!

Okay... tell me about your porducts you have done so far...!

-We have only done our first demo called "Oscularium infame" in '92. We'll soon release our second demo "The dawn of Aemizaez".

Have any record label contacted you and are there any possibility to get a deal?

-A few labels have shown interest... Ishniggarab productions from Mexico wanted to release 7" EP but I don't know surely if this will happen. After the 7" EP we intend to do a mini-LP, maybe on Infinite Mindrape (?) from USA. We'll see. We haven't sold too many demos yet, only about 100 copies, I hope this'll change when/ if the 'zines we sent to will be released, finally!

Have you had any gigs so far and what do you do on stage?

-We have played only two gigs. One in Denmark and then other in Sweden. When we play live it's (of course) with corpsepaint, lots of spikes, black clothes, black candles and Ustumallagam throws maggots to the audience. On our next show we will try to do everything much darker! We will also throw bones, maggots and spit blood, and maybe of ourselves! The show is related strongly to the darkness in our music and lyrics. We don't do anything for fun on gigs!

What you think about the Danish underground scene... can you give any names that are worth to mention?

-It's obvious that we don't like the Danish "underground", why should we? 99% of the bands make crap standard "death"-metal, and have shitty attitudes and so they are our enemies! The worst thing that happened was when some weak jerks from CEREMONY(?) shouted "fuck DENIAL OF GOD" on a gig without a reason. Afterwards there was a big discussion with them (this should have been a bloodbath!) and they proved themselves to be unbelievably stupid and false. All I'll say here is that the black-metal people will terrorize them and then kill them in a horrible way... that's for sure! This will also happen to other false lowlife here! About the bands... there are a few: APALLYAN(?), KULUKHAI, IOTURHEIMEN (former GOAT WORSHIP) and of course there is the almighty MERCYFUL FATE. (sorry, if those names are wrong, hand-writing of Azter is quite bad, sorry! -edit.)

What you think about other Scandinavian bands, especially Finnish bands?

-Scandinavia has the best bands in the world! For example (the true) MAYHEM, THE BLACK, KATATONIA, EMPEROR, BURZUM, ENSLAVED, PAGAN RITES, THRONE OF AHAZ etc. ...Yeah, BEHERIT and IMPALED NAZARENE are also great bands, I really like their albums!

Are you familiar with those Norwegians and their acts...?

-I'm not really familiar with those acts so I won't comment on them. About those death threats, I myself has sent death threats to some assholes who were destroying the true spirit, and I'll write more, no doubt! But, we also have to act against false, normal people in the underground. But I think we succeeded with the death threat we wrote...

Okay, can you tell me what you think about religion, especially about Christianity and tell me also your opinion about satanism, goat worshipping...?

-I'm highly interested in satanism and goat worshipping! I don't know if you can call me a satanist, because I haven't been practicing any rituals (yet!), but I definitely belong to the dark side of things... in my opinion Christianity is slavery and all Christians are doomed to be slaves (probably after death also). I like to see the white ones as slaves and the black ones as lords! It's a bit hard to explain my feelings about this because it is a very personal thing for me. One thing is for sure, if you are interested in satanism you must read the bible (try to get a Hebrew one). Especially the revelations in the end... I have been told that in the Hebrew Bible the Lord of Darkness wins, and not the fucking lord of heaven as in "our" Bible, which I believe to be the truth... evil prevails, fuck LaVey!

And here comes the final questions: tell me about your future plans...!?

-We plan to record our 2nd demo "The dawn of Aemizaez" in July, and we are negotiating with a few labels about releasing a 7" EP and a mini-LP. It would be great to make a living of our music but this does not seem possible without selling our material to ignorant kids, so we prefer to stay in the real underground cult! We believe the truly dedicated fans to be there!!!

Do you have anything to say for the readers or anyone else...?

-I can only say that we play black horror-metal, and that we are totally dedicated! The world must get rid off all un-serious bands which ruin the underground. Our music is not for people who think it is funny, it's only for those who believe in dark music! Thanks a lot for this interview, it was great! The winds of sorrow are blowing in the trees... Aemizaez will come! Mit had bronder og tiden er inde til at droke... Azter, the black God of Hate!!!

DEPRAVITY (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Enska

DEPRAVITY was formed in Dec. '90 and after two demos they got the deal with Adipocere records and they are going to release a mini-CD which contains 5 songs.

So, Enska, tell me something about your coming mini-CD.

-We record it in May/June and those five songs include two songs from promo-tape, title song from our EP and two new songs and the CD will be about 20 minutes long.

Tell me how did you get contract with Adipocere records?

-We sent that promo-tape to Christian of Adipocere and he liked it very much... so we signed the contract. We sent promo to other labels too but e.g. Witchhunt and Cenotaph-records had no money to do any record even if they liked our stuff!

Tell me about your songs, who do your songs and what kind of topics your songs deal with?

-I do our songs... I take my guitar in to my hands and start to play... gods don't "speak" through my guitar as they do with someone else! Our topics come from Martti's dark mind, no gore-stuff but sick words...

I think that your music is quite ordinary death-metal... what you think about this opinion?

-Really, you must be ordinary guy... hah. Well, our music isn't so ordinary but quite simple and our music isn't any fucking techno-death. I have heard so many bands which try to play more complicated metal and I must say that I haven't liked those bands at all! My opinion is that guys just try to show how well they can play and it's totally wrong attitude.

Tell me something about your influences and favourite bands!

-I like such bands as DEMIGOD (R.I.P.), PESTILENCE, ENTOMBED, VOIVOD, KISS, BLACK SABBATH, FAITH NO MORE etc. Olli (guitar) likes MORBID ANGEL, DANZIG, SLAYER etc., Martti (voc) has sold almost all of his death-metal records but black-metal is good enough for both Martti and Pete (bass). Pete is omnivorous about brutal music. Matti "McBrain" (drums) listens to IRON MAIDEN, NAPALM DEATH and so on.

Are there any bands you hate and if there are tell me why you hate them?

-I guess there are some lousy death-metal bands which I might even hate. I hate bands which change their style overnight from death-metal into black-metal or even BLACK SABBATH. And the worst of all, they follow the trend! It is hard to imagine that as a natural development!

What is your opinion about black metal?

-I don't appreciate black-metal bands, or maybe VENOM. Some of those black-metal bands have real message but many bands use their lyrics and image only for sale purposes. It's funny to watch what those Norwegian bands do... those attempts to occupy area for themselves are ridiculous... I'm on the side of IMPALED NAZARENE!!!

Satanism, devil worship and other "evil" things have got much attention in the media... what is your opinion about these things?

-These things are trend nowadays. Satanism is quite neutral thing to me, but nothing is so bad that it wouldn't contain something good too, and that goes for satanism too!

Do you think that music can make any harm to young people and what you think about censorship?

-Music doesn't have any harmful influences to young people if he or she has any sense in his/her mind! But there are always people who have something wrong in their head... censorship is unnecessary, you can see many times worse things on those document films on TV than in any records that have been banned!

What is your gig situation like?

-We have had gigs regularly one gig in a month around the Finland.

What you do on stage?

-We headbang and it's like natural thing to me.

And then... what these following things mean to you... native country?

-Finland is good place to live!

Money...?

-Money has meant to round...

Church?

-They should burn to ground, this is my opinion.

Do you get lot of letters from the 'zines, fans etc.?

-We get about 20 letters in a week and the amount increases all the time.

Do you get any inluences from the books and films?

-I read those stupid school-books... maybe that Martti takes some ideas from the films and books too.

Tell me your favourite colour and lucky number!

-My favourite colour is black and lucky number... maybe 7!

What you think about Finnish scene?

-Well, Finnish scene is full of great bands but there are also too many lousy bands... let's hope that death-metal does not become too popular style, it wouldn't be pleasant experience!

Ok, tell me your future...!

-Nobody knows what our future is like... but everybody can help us by buying DEPRAVITY-products! Write and drink beer!

MORDOR (Swi)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Scorh

Because MORDOR can be an unknown band to you, I tell you about the history and iformation about MORDOR... In 1987, musicians Scorh Anyroth and Dam Gomhory formed ARÖG, heavily influenced by the black-metal sound of BATHORY and HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST. On the threshold of producing their first demo, ARÖG broke up in 1990 as a result of unresolved problems with the drummers. Free of restrictions, the group began experimenting and soon Scorh and Dam formed a new band, MORDOR! In November '90, MORDOR produced their first demo, "Odes", a 56-minute record consisting of three tunes. Besides the presence of black/death-metal in their vocals, MORDOR blended "experimental" sounds from such other groups as SWANS and GODFLESH. Using a dark, threatening tempo, each piece stands as an apology for darkness, madness and cruel beauty. Then in 1991, they released an 11-minute recording "Black roses from the dawn of chaos". This song stood on a compilation with several earlier pieces from ARÖG and GORA which is an experimentation with sounds of noise, grind and industrial. Recently, MORDOR has been joined by Opale Ablasorh to produce "Csejthe", a historical reflection that symbolizes the people who have left their mark in time, known for their legacy to beauty as well as cruelty. In fact, it poignantly resonates the life and death of Countess Erzébét Bathori, her reincarnation and the end of the world as we now know it! MORDOR has contract with Wild Rags rec.

That background information was taken from the bio I got from Scorh!

But now comes the interview... Okay Scorh, tell me about your song writing...!

-It's me who writes the pieces, Dam and Opale watch them at the end for the final arrangement. With regard to our lyrics, I just say that our "message" is directly in our own music, and not in ordinary assemblage of words, which by us only sure the atmospheres... And through the music we want to squeeze out our own personal philosophy, the negation, depression, beauty of darkness, our adoration for some persons...

What about the gig situation and what is the purpose of your gigs?

-In fact, we don't play live... But what is sure is that our mark is not to give pleasure to people, but insted to bring them into a black whirl, where they won't go out without scars.

Tell me about your influences...?

-At the start BATHORY had a great influence on us, then CELTIC FROST and VOIVOD. This is these groups which really decided us to use music as our expression's way, our thoughts... Then GODFLESH, SWANS, FOETUS, LAIBACH, FIELDS OF NEPHILIM, DEAD CAN DANCE brought us some things very important, and recently I found CATHEDRAL impressive.

Can you tell me how would you describe your music?

-We call our style "dark", now dark metal or dark industrial...!

You live in Switzerland so can you name any good Swiss bands...?

-Lot of groups come from Switzerland... aside SAMAEL, very known, I can mention SADNESS, DAMNATORY, BERKAHAL, PUSTULATED, MISERY, NERGAL... In another style I can talk about BLOODSTAR because I find them excellent!

Can you name any bands you like, and what you think about Finnish bands?

-Well, we like BATHORY, CELTIC FROST, KING DIAMOND, CATHEDRAL, SAINT VITUS, MORSURE, MY DYING BRIDE, EMPEROR, PARADISE LOST, DARK THRONE, VENOM, WHITEHOUSE, COIL, FOETUS, SPK, NEUBAUTEN, SWANS, DAS ICH, SLEEPING DOGS WAKE, SISTERS OF MERCY, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, STRAVINSKY, PROKOVIEF, MAHLER... Otherwise I know only three Finnish groups BEHERIT, IMPALED NAZARENE and BELIAL!

That was a long list. Tell me something about your demos and how they have sold?

-Our demo "Csejthe" is a concept, which is principally based on Erzébét Bathory. She lived in the VI Egyptian dynasty end then she will reincarne herselves in our epoch. These three lifes will make be make herselves an entity finally complete, who will guide the world we know to his ruin... The triumphs of the chaos... The different pieces tells this story, even if it's not in a chronological order. "Odes" is something purelly experimental, where by the shooting aspect we want to drown the public into a black ocean. "Odes" had been sold in 300 exemplaries, the first version of "Csejthe" to 200 ex., before signing with "Wild Rags. This new one is first sold in 100 ex. Our aim for 1993 is to try sending out a maxi CD, but now there are nothing foregone.

And once again I ask the question that is very ordinary in my interviews... so, tell me what these following things mean to you... first: money?

-It's only way to something but it isn't an aim.

Church?

-The exoteric religion doesn't interest me, I'm only interested in esoteric religion. If we see the Christian church, we have an example of something which is completely empty, which have no sense. Or else I appreciate for example cathedral the architectural side impress me!

What about your native country?

-It has no importance for me. We are searching for an other human condition, so the idea of a nationality has no sense, it's an useless obstacle!

'Zines...?

-The only way for underground, where the other great magazines don't interest themselves, because of commercial reasons.

And finally your opinion about the women!?

-I see two facets: the obstacle side which keep us to realize herself. And the other side (contradictory only in appearance) which just permits to arrive at it. The sadistic woman, the dark Goddess has a great importance for us, because Shiva needs Shakti... and someone like Erzébét is here to stay to guide us!

Okay... have you ever had any problems bacause you play so uncommercial music?

-It is real that our music is all but not commercial. At the same time as the black metal becomes a way. We are too particular to integrate us fully. And this is valid for industrial, death, gothic, doom... from them we borrow some things.

What do you think about those Norwegian bands which do their silly tricks?

-It's sure that black-metal scene isn't really united, divided by a primary nationalism. When we should be united becuse a lot of people who are outside attack black-metal... but on the other side what can do the united black-metal? It can't change this world! So let's sing his near end!!!

I agree with that... and this next question is about the religion... what do you think about Christianity and other religions... how about satanism...?

-I'll only say that I'm interested in occult philosophy, a kind of dark gnosis, which should be a synthesis in capacity like tantrism, alchemia, cabbal, satanism, although I don't like this word very much because it's too limited, occultism should be more right. All this subject is the base of my life, which push myself asking me questions and at all giving well founded answers. But this search proceed in fact that I find this life without interest and instead of complains myself a false material happiness, as many people. I search to become awake. To overreach this poor human condition!

That should be clear?! But tell me what is your lucky number and favourite colour?

-I haven't lucky numbers. As for my favourite colours, that's just their absence which interest me. Otherwise said black.

Have you ever been ripped-off?

-Some times but before giving any names I'd like to know if this fucking customs and posts are not the only responsible.

What you think about trends like death-metal, are there any original bands left?

-In defect to be innovers they are perhaps even not reformers... It's often people searching their identity and they believe to find it in movement of crowd, even underground. I don't think that it is necessary to doom them. They will finish to grow themselves and change their life going into class. For me a group like BATHORY and CELTIC FROST until "Into the Pandemonium" including, have kept their originality, progressing... Otherwise I think that a group like WHITEHOUSE succeed in the extreme, but being completely original.

Okay that is all for now... tell me if you have anything to say to readers...!

-A compilation K7 with a new title is available in June. Finally I'll just say that "The only hope, which gains whatever attention is the day where the world will come back into the Nothingness"

MORNINGSTAR (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Sinister Satyr

About the background... MORNINGSTAR was formed in '89 and because of the line-up problems they release their debut demo in '92. After that their line-up changed again and Sinister Satyr is the only original member left. The second demo of MORNINGSTAR, "Inside the circle of the pentagram", was released in May '93...

Let's start this interview: Have you always played this kind of music or has you style changed during these four years?

-Well, it's quite difficult to say, we have always been quite black and hard band but the speed has changed a lot. I think that our earlier songs are musically as black-metal, the lyrics dealt with horror and viking legends. I would like to say that we are a black-metal band with death/doom influences! I formed this band because I wanted to hear my own thoughts involved around the clefs...

You do all of the music so could you tell how you actually do songs?

-As I get some idea I make couple of guitar riffs and then is made bass and drum around the guitar riffs. After that comes the lyrics which are maybe the most challenging part... I must think of the lyrics very hard, and I have planned to do a long story with the Kalewala-subjects of course!

Has this Kalewala-thing came to your mind by accident or are there any influences from AMORPHIS perhaps...?

-Well... at least AMORPHIS and SENTENCED sing about these topics but this idea came into my mind in '90 so I think that we were first! I don't mean that we are going to sing Kalewala into the record but make lyrics and tales inspired by Kalewala!

Does it matter what kind of lyrics bands make... do lyrics mean anything?

-I can't listen to any "party-shit". I think that this kind of music should be serous... I have tired of these stupid clichés like "Jesus saves" or "Ave satan".

Do you have any musical influences have BEHERIT and BATHORY such influences?

-We don't try to any techno shit but hard and simple music. Bands you mentioned above have realized the same thing... but we don't try to copy them, listen to our demo and conclude yourselves...!

Name some favourite bands from Finland and abroad...?!

-Finnish bands: BEHERIT, UNHOLY, ARCHGOAT, IMPALED NAZARENE... foreign bands: BURZUM, BATHORY, DARK THRONE...!!!

You mentioned two Norwegian bands, what you think about this Norway-thing?

-I have nothing against them, not until they act against me. They can do what they want, I don't care!

Can you tell me something about your stage-show... are there any special effects such as blood etc.?

-Our gig-situation is fucking bad, we've played only four gigs so far. I have mask gown etc. and there could blood, it depends! We have only session-drummer so it could be quite difficult to play live...

Do you have any opinion about the very popular subjects: satanism and devil worship... are there any difference between these things?

-There are differences... satanist don't worship anyone and support individualism. Devil worshipper is harder to explain but I'm not a devil worshipper, Jesus worshipper but I think with my own brains. I could be a satanist but it's better to find out things first!

Tell your opinions about the following things... DEICIDE?

-DEICIDE plays listenable death-metal (not black-metal!), their image is commercial with those shorts, caps etc.!

What about money...?

-Without money can't manage but it can ruins!

Women?

-Hmm... women are one of the most interesting concepts. Sometimes so devilish and sometimes so desirable. Woman has something that man hasn't so why don't we take what they have...

You try to get a somekind of a deal with your "Inside..." demo but what kind of label would be the best?

-Honest record label would be the best! It must have some distribution also but money isn't the most important thing! Maybe Lethal or Osmose would be good for us, I don't care about the big labels like EARACHE.

You have existed a few years already so do you have any opinion about the Finnish scene and what about other countries do you like Swedish scene?

-Finnish scene is the best! The Swedish scene bores me to death, Sunlight, ENTOMBED etc. you know, lots of good and bad bands arise... I hope these shitty bands die...

Do you get lot of mail from the 'zines etc. and how you react to them?

-I receive mail every day, I like to answer to letters and I answer all of the letters I get!

Do you have any 'zines you would like to mention here...?

-New Miasma, Biopsy, Syphilis are good, also Uriliah, Diarium Autopsia, Cerberus... I have read bad 'zine too... foreign 'zines have not send me copies, maybe those are rip-offs!

Do you go to metal-gigs and what has been the best gig you have seen so far?

-I think that concerts are very good places to meet friends and perhaps the best gig I've seen was IMPALED NAZARENE's gig!

Do you take any influences from the books or movies...?

-Some books has influence on me. I read books like Kalewala, Lord of the rings, Stephen King's books, Lovecraft, Kaari Urio's books etc. there are very many good books in the world...!

How often you rehearse together and is there any kind of scene in Äänekoski?

-We rehearse about 3 times a week. Here are couple of guys who listen to death-metal but active underground people like we here are none!

Do you have any other hobbies, are you interested in sports e.g.?

-Sports sucks... I don't do any other hobbies within sport than body building. We listen to music, read books, sacrifice little children (heh heh!), blaspheme and have fun...!

What are your future plans...?

-Well... we try to get a deal with some label and play some gigs. We can move into more arctic place... who knows what could happen...?!!

Okay... thanks for your answers, tell me if you have anything to tell into the end of this interview...?!

-What... did it end already?! Thanks for your great interview! Good luck for you and your 'zine!

MORTAL GOD (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Jarno Taskula

Jarno, let's start this interview with your background information...!

-Okay, actually MORTAL GOD was formed in August '92 but we have somekind of project-band called ABHORRENCE earlier and MORTAL GOD is almost same... only one member has added into line-up so we have four members instead of three now. We made one demo when we were ABHORRENCE and I can record it if he/she who wants it send me a blank tape and stamps! After ABHORRENCE-demo we paused half a year. After that pause we took guitarist into band because Tomi has earlier played the bass and guitar. After that change we rehearsed a little and made that "Impurity" demo in our rehearsal place with 4-track recorder. Our line-up is the following: Jarno Taskula/vocals; Timo Laihanen/guitar; Tomi Mykkänen/guitar and Saku Ovaskainen/drums... the reason why Tomi plays guitar again is that he got tired with bass so we are looking for a bass player at the moment.

Tell me about your first MORTAL GOD demo.

-It includes five tracks and my opinion is that it has succeeded as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Well there are some mistakes but not so bad anyway. Tracks are quite near what we wanted but our style will change a little in the future but it's impossible to say how but let's see then!

Can you describe your style with two adjectives and tell why those adjectives fit into your music?

-Hmm... our tracks in demo are straight because they don't stop but go ahead. The second good adjective is simple because our songs don't contain quick changes but our later tracks are more technical but not too complicated either.

I agree with you. Next question deals with your influences, can you tell any names?

-Hmm, I don't know but I can name a few... METALLICA and BLACK SABBATH for our guitarists. I'm influenced by many "strong" voices vocalists like Barney, John Tardy, Luttinen, Panda etc. Saku listens to Dave Weckl and other good drummers. About the metal-drummers Saku likes Sean Reinert, drummers of CONFESSOR and THE ACCUSED. We have a few bands we all like to listen to, LUBRICANT, METALLICA, SLUMGUDGEON, THE ACCUSED etc. My favourite bands are NAPALM DEATH, MASSACRA, DEATH, MIND RIOT and many other death-metal band. Timo listens to METALLICA, KREATOR, TESTAMENT etc. Tomi's favourites are e.g. JIMI HENDRIX, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, JETHRO TULL, CREAM etc. And Saku like to listen to bands which have a good drummer, about the bands he likes at least DEATH, HOUSE OF USHER, BENEDICTION and MALEVOLENT CREATION.

You are quite a new band so have you ever had any gigs so far?

-Unfortunately we haven't had any gigs so far but we don't play live before we find a bass player.

What about the future in this gig situation...?

-Well... if we manage to get gigs in the future we would try to play so good that the audience would remember us without any "Worship satan or god" -messages!

You don't want to give any messages but what about your name, MORTAL GOD, does it mean anything to you?

-Name, as it is, has been chosen from among a few name suggestions we had. Our name could tell something about our lack of interest towards religions!

Tell me your opinion about lyrics of the death-metal bands, does it really matter what dm-bands sing?

-It's every bands own business what they sing or what don't. For us the lyrics are quite important but before lyrics come music! Many people think nowadays that e.g. death-metal bands must sing about death etc. but for me it doesn't matter. E.g. LEUKEMIA plays death-metal and the lyrics are about the flowers and trees. The fact is that if the band wants that the message is evil or anything like that it's impossible to sing about trees and flowers...!

Okay... next question deals with these black- or whatever bands that have got an enormous popularity with their satanic and dark lyrics... are you familiar with this thing?

-First of all, we are NOT any kind of satanic band... and we'll never be! It's band that choose if they want to be satanic or whatever, but too many band become satanic, or at least they claim so, without any knowledge of the matter and only because their favourite bands are satanic. My opinion is that many band just want to draw attention by such image, but I also think that there are many "real" bands which really mean what they sing! DEICIDE, e.g., is for me just another band which collect money with their image and also those Norwegian bands are such...

I think that you have some kid of opinion about these "popular" things... satanism and devil worship, tell me...?!

-Yes I have. Satanism makes sense. It is religion among the others but many people have a wrong and twisted "picture" of it because it has so often mixed with devil worship which is madness...

You mentioned those Norwegian bands a while ago, have you got any death-threats or are you familiar with them at all...?

-We aren't familiar even we don't think in a same way as they do. Mostly those bands play "shit"... and those acts like burn down those churches are ridiculous! They must be stupid or/and crazy if they do those things and only because they hate Christianity. And what about those threats, hah, I don't know about the others but I feel like laughing! Let's see when I get a "letter bomb"...

And then, your opinion about the following things. First: church?

-Well, Tomi don't belong to church and we others don't visit there and none of us burn them down!

What about the native country and army...?

-Native country is a fine place to live and all of us go to army.

Underground 'zines...?

-'Zines are very important for the bands like MORTAL GOD, you can't find information about new bands from anywhere else!

And the last... women?

-All of us are interested in opposite sex, women are fun in different ways...!

Do you get lot of mail from labels, fans etc., and what about rip-offs...?

-We have received mail and there have been some rip-offers too. I don't want to tell any names but it's fucking frustrating to send those promo packets and then notice that you don't get any answers at all...!

How often you rehearse together and do you have any other "hobbies"?

-Well, we rehearse two times a week but in June things change because Tomi and I go to the army. About the other hobbies I can say that I have played ice-hockey but not any more so seriously. Saku and Timo also go in for sport sometimes and Tomi watch TV and eat.

Okay, the final question... tell me about your future and tell if you have any messages to add!

-Army first, but we could do somekind of a tape in summer or autumn. Then we are looking for a bass player and then play some gigs if possible and do our name better known. About the LPs... let's see what will happen! Hello for all who have helped us and also for you Tommi for this tricky interview!

OBFUSCATION (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Julius Jääskeläinen

First I tell you something about background... OBFUSCATION was formed in the early '91 by the guitarists Tomi and Julius. Actually OBSCENE was the name of the band when the 1st demo, "Greed", was done in March '92, after that they noticed that band called OBSCENE already existed and thus the name had to be changed to OBFUSCATION! After the first attempt it took almost exactly one year of suspended action to get the 2nd demo done.

So, let's start this interview with the question: tell me how your songs and lyrics have been done?

-It's quite complicated process and all of the songs have been done in a different way so it's hard to say anything sure about that process. I and Tomi are the main composers. Mikko is satisfied with playing drums as we try to tell him. In the beginning Tomi and I has somekind of outline, we think some additions and in most cases the final song is the combination of these things. This can sound easy but it's not! The composition takes about two months and during this process there are argues, debate and many different versions, and because Tomi and I are perfectionists, and we demand certain things for our songs, such things as logic, originality and fluency... and the problem is that we disagree in most cases what those things mean... so far we have managed to solve these problems, but what happens in the future is impossible to say. About the lyrics I can say that when the song is otherwise ready I start to make lyrics into it. Lyrics have dealt with things as religion, death, politics, war etc. The touch of my lyrics is serious but lately there have come more sarcastic humour... I am probably becoming more cynical about the things I see around.

What are the biggest musical influences in you music?

-It's impossible to say exactly, but I think that bands like CARCASS, ENTOMBED, NAPALM DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, IRON MAIDEN and HELLOWEEN have effect for what kind of a music OBFUSCATION plays. I can't say about the future because my taste has changed a much during the years and the death-metal in our music is more Tomi's than my cause/merit! I think that nowadays most of the death-metal bands hasn't "feeling", and the music is in a certain way empty. Such records as "Abominations..." of M. ANGEL or "Symphonies of..." of CARCASS has not been made anymore! About my listening habits I can say that I like to listen to e.g. BEATLES, G.G.F.H., VELVET UNDERGROUND, PUNGENT STENCH and "Till Eulenspiegel" of Richard Strauss but these favourites vary a lot...!

Can you describe you music with two adjectives?

-Well, our music is angry but considerate. There are pleasure for the motion- and sense-side of the brains. What we do we do seriously and with good care, but we try to include some primitive strength in our music... I can't describe better, listen to our music and decide what you think!

What would you do on stage... you haven't play live because you have no bassist but tell me about plans, ideas...?

-I don't think that our stage appearance would give any specific things for the audience. I don't think that we would have "show" on stage and we wouldn't move too much on stage because playing our instruments needs concentration. Only effects we would have are smoke and if it would be possible, blue- and red-shade lighting.

What is the best gig you have seen, and what are you waiting for good gig to be?

-I have been only five-six gigs so far, but the best was certainly in Riihimäki, where was AFFLICTED, XYSMA, DISGRACE etc. Sounds were poor but what else they could be... about the bands and their doings on stage, I can say that for me is more interesting to hear some speak between songs etc., for me it's more interesting listen to these things than just watch some stage-shows, it's of course only my opinion...

What is your opinion about the Finnish scene... any favourite bands???

-I don't know Finnish scene very well and I can only say that DISGRACE, XYSMA, LUBRICANT, SENTENCED, DEMILICH and PARAXISM, for example, are very good bands, some of the best in the world! Many bands, however, hasn't view and knowledge what they are actually doing, but I think this will change in the long run, many bands are new.

Does it matter what kind of lyrics death-metal bands do... what is your opinion about these quite popular satanic bands and their lyrics?

-Bands can sing or growl whatever they want, of course! Only limit is probably, if music and lyrics don't fit together. I mean that you can't sing about love etc. and music is aggressive, evil and so on! Satanic lyrics fit into death-metal because death-metal is evil, so I don't have anything against that kind of bands... how many satanic is true, well... who knows, who cares?!

What is the worst/best LP you have bought and why?

-The worst is probably LP of KARAVAN, which I have never listen through... the best is either "Symphonies..." of CARCASS or "Sergeant Pepper's..." of BEATLES, I can't put those into order, sorry!

What is your opinion about following things... first: religion and church?

-Is good that there are religion and church because they slow down development which is too fast, collapse of moral and ethics, and give many people a secure feeling. Christian ethics is based on resignation and humbleness, and would be socially good if most of the people would obey it! Satanism and other individualist movements are healthy as fringe phenomena but total egoistic society would be doomed! I think that most of the death-metal bands are against church because they want to rebel against authorities.

What about native country?

-I think that in the modern world is insane stick to societies determined by place of residence, language and race, much less make war for that!

Then 'zines...?

-'Zines are pleasant hobby and most of them are also pleasant to read. I just would hope that the topics could expand outside the music. I'm doing a 'zine called Kysto and I try to include something else than just those typical interviews and articles.

And finally your opinion about women?

-Women... beautiful women are beautiful!!!

What you think about these famous things like satanism and devil worship?

-People can think what ever they want but I don't accept violence and anything that can harm someone!

How often you play together and do you have any other hobbies?

-Tomi and I play together every week but because Mikko lives in Oulu we can't rehearse together more than 5-6 times a year! I have other hobbies such as football, role-playing games and I also play in other bands which are PASKARÖYKKIÖ and BLIND EMOTION!

Do you receive lots of letters and other mail?

-I receive 5-15 letters a week and Tomi get also some. We try to answer to all the letters. I don't know about the rip-offs but we haven't get replies from all the 'zines and people we have written to. Labels haven't sent letters so far but we have sent our demo for many labels so maybe something is coming soon?!!

What is your favourite colour and lucky number?

-I haven't favourite colour but the lucky number is 7.

Do you think that traditional death-metal bands have any chances to get contracts in the future?

-I believe that good music will always be popular, it could be death-metal too. Of course after the big "boom" it's harder to get big contracts but I think that dm will stay alive. And I would like to point out that to me it's not so much what you do, it's how you do it...

Do you have any future plans...?

-We hope that we get a contract with our demo... I mean EP-contract but if can't get we must do a self-published EP or something like that. If we manage to get a bassist we try to play live, that's it!

-I really like all of the songs included. Maybe my best is "Exiled archangels".

Tell me your favourite bands and such bands which have had influence to your way to do music...?

Do you have any special comment about this Norwegian-thing...?

-I don't have any special comment. I live thousands of kilometres away of them so I don't know what happens and to be honest... I don't care!!! I live 24 hours a day and the flame burn inside me, I care only for myself and my close environment!

Do you get lots of mail and have there ever been any rip-off cases?

-I've been rip-off a lot of times, yeah I get a lot of mail...

What you think about satanism and other thing like that...?

-The whole situation start becoming a stupidity, I don't care about Christionity neither satanism. I'm bored of those trendy statements... I live into really occult which means wisdom (I hope you can understand what I mean...)

Well, I don't know but anyway... Tell me something about Greek scene or is there such... any bands you could mention...?

-There are a lot of great bands in Greece like VARATHRON, ZEMIAL, NECROMANTIA, THOU ART LORD, SEPTIC FLESH, but still a lot of shit! I think that the scene goes for every country...

Do you read books and do you take any topics from the books to your songs?

-My music is whole of my life including our cult: around this I have hobbies.

What would you think if someone commit a suicide and then parents claim that your music is the reason for that... and have your ever had any problems because of your music???

UNHOLY (Fin)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Jarkko Toivonen

Let's start with a background for which I got from their bio... In spring of the 1988 Jarkko Toivonen and Pasi Äijö formed a band called HOLY HELL. After the release of their 1st demo "Kill Jesus" they changed their name into UNHOLY. Under a new name the band recorded their 2nd demo "Procession of black" in the year of 1990. In the same year UNHOLY recorded their legendary "Demo 1190", from which they have sold about 1500 copies. Their 4th and last demo "Trip to depressive autumn" was released in March 1992. Soon after this UNHOLY signed a contract with Lethal records and in September '92 they entered the so called "Vienna power station" studio in Vienna to record 1st CD for Lethal records and it has been published in the beginning of this year! Masterpiece is called "From the shadows" and it has been reviewed later in this 'zine... but now into the interview...

Tell me your current line-up!

-Jarkko/guitar and acoustic guitar; Pasi/bass guitar and vocals; Waltteri/guitar; Jan/percussion

How do you do your songs and lyrics, what are those lyrics about?

-Our riffs arise in an unconscious state of mind from which we consciously collect the song. In our CD our lyrics deal with Nietzsche-like coming, modern and traditional satanism and personal experiences about things mentioned above. We also get ideas from our autumn-like psilocybe-cosmic fungus-trips. I claim that to understand the function and structure about ourselves and cosmos, we must open the gate which is between consciousness and unconsciousness and it's impossible without strong hallucinogenics. I believe in Jung's theory that the essence of the unconsciousness is connected with surrounding nature, in other words, microcosmos is connected with macrocosmos. Our lyrics are important for us although the idiots don't understand them.

That is clear (?)... can you name any bands which have had influence on your way to do music... tell me also if you have any bands in mind you like/dislike the most?

-Earlier our biggest influence was the CELTIC FROST but nowadays there isn't any band that has an influence on us. My favourite bands are LED ZEPPELIN and VELVET UNDERGROUND and I also listen to a neoclassical violin-music... I hate the most Hare Krisna of BURZUM because he claims that devil worship is the same thing than satanism. Devil worship is nothing more than anti-christianity and it has nothing to do with satanism. I don't like AMORPHIS and other bands which follow the trends. Also AMORPHIS started as a grind/death-band but nowadays AMORPHIS have changed their style to gothic-doom that all the brainless trend-followers play these days. SISTERS OF MERCY is the best gothic-band, PARADISE LOST SUCKS!!! For some reason I hate all the deathmetal bands.

How many gigs you have had... what you do on stage?

-We haven't had many gigs because we play so noncommercial music. I think that the shows of black-metal bands are only entertainment. We also had warmasks and gowns but because it became a trend we play without masks and gowns nowadays. It seemed gloomy but we don't want any poser reputation. We still have candles on stage because it creates dark atmosphere but not a poser feeling. We destroy LP's from such bands as BURZUM and ABRUPTUM in our shows, also the products of Christians will be destroyed...

Tell me something about your "From the shadows" debut and tell me also how you got the deal with Lethal records?

-Well, it's quite a good record... you definitely can't find any PARADISE LOST plagiarisms from that. The deal was made like this... Lethal's boss Michael sent us the contract because he loved our originality and we signed it and sent it back to Michael. The deal ends in 1997 and we do at least one record during the deal and also more if the mutual trust continues also in the future. Lethal does not organize any tours to us but one Dutch management office does. Tour lasts two to three weeks in the Germany and the Netherlands.

Do you get lots of mail from the fans and'zines etc. and has there ever been any rip-off cases?

-We get approximately 3 letters in a day. Some 7"-labels were interested in us before the deal with Lethal but also Italian Obscure Plasma was interested to do UNHOLY split-LP and full length LP. Roberto from Obscure Plasma (HAIL HIM) was very sad when he heard about our deal with Lethal. Maybe it's worth to mention that Peaceville which has an honest reputation as a record label was interested in us. We should have paid for them 4000-5000 Fmk in advance to get some 7" out... FUCK PEACEVILLE. Peaceville has been the biggest rip-offer for us... also Tony "sh-it" Särkkä from ABRUPTUM is a swindler and he claims to be a satanist... I think he is a looser! (There has been also some other problems but we leave this topic now. -edit.)

What you think about the band which send death-threats to the other bands... what you think about Norwegians doings?

-Such bands which do so are musically so lousy that nobody notices them so they draw an attention towards them with those childish manners. As I said earlier... BURZUM and others like them are only lousy devil worshippers who rise attention with their low acts. Wimps can't do music... We haven't got any death-threats and we haven't sent any. I wouldn't kill anyone if I couldn't be 100% sure that the person who wants to die would want me to kill him. I'm against violence unless violence is aimed at me!

What you think about Finnish death/black-metal bands and what is the best Finnish band... tell me your opinion about Swedish death-metal?!!

-The best Finnish is definitely UNHOLY!!! Without Swedish death-metal the amount of the destroyed records in our shows would stay minimal.

OK... then different kind of question: tell me what following things mean to you: first, church, religion and native country?

-These are authorities which were created to benefit the inferiors like soldiers or workers. There are people who have master-morality and people who have slave-morality. Some people are so unintelligent they need the authority to control themselves. "Supermen", as we, are above all the authorities, authorities don't mean anything for us unless we can profit by them. About 2% of mankind have master-morality and the rest are rabble which are under the influence of Karma's law. People are not equal with each other. HAIL SATAN HAIL NIETZSCHE!!!

Okay... what about DEICIDE and Morrisound?

-DEICIDE and Morrisound profit the rabble with their lousy products!

How about the underground 'zines?

-Underground 'zines are the only ones which could afford to be honest but all aren't! 'Zines give good critics to demos from the bands and labels. I hope you do not belong to these people Tommi! If you don't like our CD then say that it's not a good record. (It's great and I even did not get it for free. -edit.) Sword of Damocles is the best underground 'zine.

Satanism... what does it mean to you?

-Satanism is like religion to us who are representative of master-morality, in principle it's atheistic, we worship ourselves instead of some kind external divinity.

Hmm, finally your opinion about money and women?

-With money we can buy and woman is different race and sometimes goddess-race!

What else you do than just play music... do you have any other hobbies?

-In our band all except Pasi go in for sports. I was interested in karate earlier but now I'm going to take to some other sport. Waltteri's hobby is taekwondo, Jan is studying in college to ba a historic teacher and his hobby is ice-hockey. Pasi's hobby is self destruction with alcohol and cannabis, that is a pity. We play together only twice a week because Pasi drinks so much.

All right... the final question: tell me your future plans!

-Tour in early summer and EP for US market.

VARATHRON (Gre)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Stephan Necroabyssious

I give you some information about background of VARATHRON... this following "story" is quotation from the bio I got from Stephan... "When the black time sign the endless dark was around the Earth and the kingdom of Assurbanical arise!!! Anthropomorphaus demons and wizards called the Great Dark lord, from the city of demons, BELED-L-GIN. The name of him is... VARATHRON! After many-many years the legend arise! Born the unholy year 1989, the VARATHRON's kingdom!"

Well, that was a story... but let's start the interview with your current line-up.

- Okay, it's: Jim Mutilator/bass, John/guitar, Steve/guitar, Themis/drums and Stephan/vocals! And as you perhaps noticed, Jim plays also in ROTTING CHRIST.

Tell me something about your material next!?

-We have published so far two demos in 1989 and in 1991. After the second demo Blackvomit records released the 7" EP, called "A step beyond dreams". In the year 1992, Black power records released split-LP of VARATHRON "Everlasting sins" with NECROMANTIA! And right now we're working for our promo-tape and for the upcoming new LP!

Those products will be killers, but tell me about your music... describe it.

-Hmm... our music is a journey to utter darkness and evil! Blasphemic occult stuff!

I can imagine what you mean... but what is it like to be Greek band playing this kind of music in the land where foreign people usually hear totally different kind of music?

-We haven't had any problems, as you know the ancient warriors were great priests and they were into occultism!

What about the Greek scene?

-We have lots of bands but the most evil are NECROMANTIA, ZEMIAL, AGATUS and in old death/thrash veins the SPIDER KICKERS (from 1986!!!) and of course us and ROTTING CHRIST.

So if you have so many great bands in Greece what is your gig situation and what you do on stage?

-Here in Greece it's very difficult to play live because we don't have very many places where we can play live. But the bands play in some crypts! Our show is mystic gathering and our meaning are psalms to ancient Lords.

So, how these psalms have been done and what exactly these lyrics contain?

-Our songs tell about ancient civilizations, gods and demons; trees and deserts, red horizon and evil warriors, nights with fullmoon and wild wind, for the absolute evil and dark!

Who do your songs and what is your opinion about satanic lyrics?

-All the members do our songs. My opinion about black lyrics - satanic as you call - it's a positive.

And what kind of lyrics you won't ever do?

-I never do lyrics about politics and human-corruption! I live 24 hours in day and I don't like to sing about that!

Tell me about your influences!

-Well, our influences are from the nature and our evil nightmares and terrors. I have heard tons of bands and I think that Finnish scene is very good. I have lot of friends there! HAIL TO FINLAND!!!

What you think about rip-offers, have you had any problems with them?

-I don't say much about rip-offs! Just: FUCK 'EM ALL!!! I don't have any problems with them.

Do you get lots of letters from your fans and have you received letters from girls?

-Hey... I have got tons of letters since 1989! I have received letters from girls too... and we have got thousands of letters from 'zines etc.

Then different kind of question... what does the VARATHRON mean?

-I was waiting for this question. Well, VARATHRON is a Greek word, ancient! Means the absolute dark, the deep erebus, black evil chaos!

Okay, what is the most stupid name for death-metal band you have ever heard does it really matter how bands do their lyrics and names?

-I like all the names of the bands and I think that basic is the music and lyrics of course!

Tell me your opinion about Norwegian bands...?

-About Norwegian bands and all the black scene, I think it's GODLY and the bands kill! I don't like to say words and evil messages, I just LOVE deadly my black music... I support my music 'till death and beyond the grave!!! Our music is powerful and GODLY! HAIL AND KILL!

Thanx for answering my question... Do you have anything to say to me or readers?

-Well, a big thanx to you and hails to readers of your 'zine. I say good luck to you and support the underground!

VITAL REMAINS (USA)          download HERE

Questions Tommi Hakonen / answered by Jeff Gruslin

Let's start with the history...!

-Well... we started in August of 1989, recorded two demos and 7" EP on Thrash records and our debut LP "Let us pray" was recorded in December 1991.

Tell me tour current line-up and tell me also why you had a session drummer on the 1st LP?

-Line-up... me, Jeff/vocals; Tony and Paul on guitars; Joe on bass and Ricky/drums! Well, basically our original drummer was a fucking wimpy pussy into Christianity and all. Fuck him rot in hell! Now we have Ricky on drums.

I see... but tell me about your songs and lyrics in general?

-I write the lyrics to the music. All my lyrics are inspired by my pure hatred towards Christianity and the war we must create!

Why your first LP/CD didn't contain any lyric sheet?

-We were lost of time, and the record had to be released so I said fuck it. They'll be on the 2nd LP though!

When I first heard your 7" EP it wasn't the biggest moment in my life but when I heard your CD it contained many things that make me buy it... there is very interesting intro in a song "Ceremony of the seventh circle"... can you tell me something about it?

-Well, I like our 7" EP... the intro was a collaboration of real occult practicing, and a few samples... it's about a black mass being held on the opening of the 7th seal. It's blasphemy...

What you think about trends like death- or black-metal...?

-We have very strong black influences. I have been into black/death since 1981, with VENOM, BATHORY, MERCYFUL FATE, HELLHAMMER and so on. I think trends will die and the true black will last, they sill jump another wagon. WE WILL LAST!!!

Tell me about your deal with Peaceville/Deaf... why didn't you make any contract with some American label?

-We signed for a multy record deal. Peaceville is only one of the true. American labels to me are only into money we make them!

How soon you are going to release a new LP or EP and will your style differ from the 1st album?

-We will record our 2nd LP at the end of this summer. Our record is a surprise, just wait to hear it!

What do these following things mean to you... money?

-Money is what you need to support a lifestyle.

Christian church...?

-Christian church is shit! Burn them all down. (familiar, isn't it?!! -edit.)

Satanism?

-Satanism if it's used correctly and not abused... you'll succeed!

Tell me your favourite bands and influences?

-A few bands & some strong influences are those I mentioned earlier... bands I like MARDUK, IMMORTAL, MAYHEM, DARK THRONE, ACHERON, EMPEROR, NECROPHOBIC, MASTER'S HAMMER, MASOCHIST, BLACK CRUCIFIXION, THRONE OF AHAZ, SAMAEL and others.

How is your gig situation at the moment...

-We tour the whole USA starting May 13th!

What then you do on stage, and does it contain any deeper meaning to you?

-It's reality, us up on stage is reality man! Of course we do not care what people think, you either like it or hate it!

Do you get lot of fan-mail and have you ever had any problems with rip-offers?

-I answer all mail and I've had problems with many fuckers but all in good time. I am not rip-off!

Have you ever got any death-threats and are you familiar with those Norwegian bands which do those stupid things?

-Fuck that shit. I'm no pussy and I'll serve 10-20 years to destroy any fucker that fucks with me. Here in the USA tose kind of people would be destroyed...!

Are you a violent people towards other people?

-Yes, I'm violent to a certain extent, if one wishes to harm me or others within, they will be destroyed simple!

Do you use movies as a source to your lyrics...?

-I like all sorts of movies but not as a source of my lyrics.

What you think about politics... or about the bands that try to make world better place to live with their songs?

-Fuck politics. The world is too fucked up to care; these bands are doing what they like, as long as it's from the soul!

Tell me your future plans...!

-To record our second LP, and hopefully come to Europe.

What was it like to answer to these questions... do you have anything to say to readers?

-It was very good, I guess... buy our LP - AVE SATANAS - thanx Tommi for your support and interview!!!
